Visit Fort Jesus
Your first major attraction is Fort Jesus, one of Mombasa's most important historical landmarks. Built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to protect their interests at the port of Mombasa, the fort later changed hands several times and reflects centuries of interaction between African, Arab, Turkish, Persian and European cultures.
Today, Fort Jesus is a museum displaying archaeological and historical collections connected with the fort and the wider East African coast.
During your visit, explore:
Fort walls and bastions, Museum exhibits, Historic courtyards, Portuguese architectural features, Omani and later additions, Archaeological displays, Views towards the Indian Ocean and Mombasa harbour.
Fort Jesus is currently managed by the National Museums of Kenya, whose general museum admission hours are 8:30 AM–5:30 PM daily, including weekends and public holidays.
Explore Mombasa Old Town
After Fort Jesus, continue on foot through Mombasa Old Town. This historic district provides an opportunity to experience the city's distinctive Swahili coastal character. The area contains narrow streets, historic buildings, carved wooden doors, balconies and old mosques reflecting Arabic and Indian influences.
Your guide will introduce you to the history and architecture of the Old Town while you explore the streets at a relaxed pace. Depending on your interests, you can stop for photographs, visit local shops or purchase traditional coastal souvenirs.
Mombasa Tusks
Continue to one of Mombasa's best-known landmarks, the Mombasa Tusks along Moi Avenue. The large aluminium tusks form a distinctive gateway and have become one of the city's most recognizable photographic landmarks. Your guide can explain their place in modern Mombasa's history before continuing with the city tour.
Mombasa Markets & Local Culture
Continue through the city's busy commercial areas and, depending on your interests, visit a local market or souvenir shop. This part of the tour provides a glimpse into everyday life in Mombasa, including the mixture of cultures, languages, foods and businesses that characterize the coastal city.
Lunch – Optional
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant offering Kenyan, Swahili, seafood or international cuisine. Lunch is optional and can be added to your tour package. You can choose a restaurant based on your preferred cuisine and budget.
Mama Ngina Waterfront – Optional
If time permits, continue to Mama Ngina Waterfront, a popular public waterfront area overlooking the entrance to Mombasa's harbour. Enjoy a relaxed walk, take photographs and experience the coastal atmosphere before beginning the return journey.
