Tsavo East National Park, home to the famous Tsavo lions and red-dust elephants. The lions are the stuff of ferocious legend, from times gone by…
Tsavo West National Park is big and beautiful – the deep colors of its sprawling savannah melt into its rolling hills and endless sky.
Amboseli National Park, which sits at the foot of Africa’s tallest peak. Great herds of elephants dominate the landscape here, parading past the snow-capped mountain.
Around 06:00 – 06:30Hrs
Then head out on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, also known as the Early Explorer’s route to Tsavo East National Park.
Safari.
We’ll enjoy an early morning picturesque drive to the park and pause at its southern gate to stretch and partake of refreshments.
Before you stretch the vast expanse of Tsavo – a rugged land of big sky and endless horizons. You’ll start your safari here with game drives in your 4 x 4 Jeep, searching for lions, leopard and immense elephants who like to roll about in the park’s red-dust dirt.
We’ll freshen up at our accommodation with lunch and some relaxation time. After the midday heat begins to wane, we’ll jump aboard our jeep and head out to watch the wildlife, now emerging into the cooling day.
Mudanda Rock and Aruba Dam are two of the busy watering holes where the park’s wildlife gathers and always a good spot for game watching. We’ll look for eland, gerenuk, impala and Masai giraffe.
Toward evening as we head back to our lodging, we just might be dazzled with a glorious African sunset.
Overnight
You’ll spend the night in the park at your choice of safari lodge or tented camp.
(80 kms Apr 1.5 hrs..)
On safari, we like to get up early, before sunrise. How else can you enjoy the splendor all about? And then we watch as the light breaks on the golden savannah. This is the perfect time for an early morning game drive!
We’ll “hunt” for the grazers and carnivores… seeing who we can add to our checklist.
Then comes breakfast and a final viewing drive as we exit on our way for the short hop to Tsavo West.
This park my surprise you with its contrasts and colors – golden fields, green rolling hills, and dark volcanic lava beds hold an assortment of large and small wildlife. There’s lion, leopard, and buffalo, but also smaller games like bush baby, hartebeest, and dik-dik.
Of special note – the park features a rhino sanctuary, a protected home to over 80 of these endangered creatures. We’ll visit the enclave in the afternoon and track the immense but delightful rhinos.
Overnight
Your second safari night will be at Tsavo West at your choice of lodge or tented camp.
(100kms Apr 2 hrs.s)
It’s another safari morning and that means we’re up early for a pre-breakfast game drive. We’ll listen to the birdsong and the first stirrings of the game as it emerges from the night, ready to explore.
This is Africa at its most glorious and we’ll be there to take it all in.
The park’s Mzima Springs is a lovely surprise of greenery, palm trees, and an unending flow of crystalline water. Mzima means “life” in Swahili and this lush spot is life giving for the hippos, crocodiles and exotic fish that inhabit this special place. Also look for elephants, zebra, and other wildlife that naturally flock to this Eden.
Now it’s time for the short drive to Amboseli Park – just follow the towering guide of Mt. Kilimanjaro to set your course. This smaller park lies at the foot of Africa’s tallest peak and together they create amazing vistas and perfect photos.
We’ll arrive at the park in the late morning, relax, have lunch, and set out to “capture” the many animals to be seen here. Amboseli is famous for its herds of elephants, and you will see them marching proudly before a backdrop of the iconic mountain.
While at the park, you can enjoy an optional visit with the local Maasai people in their village. Meet them and learn about their ancient herding lifestyle. This can all be arranged with your guide.
Toward evening, the cloud cover which sometimes obscures Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak may partly reveal one of Africa’s truest wonders.
Overnight
Our final safari night will be at Amboseli at your lodge or tented camp.
(250kms: Apr: 3.5hrs)
Third safari morning – third early rise! And we’re off on another sunrise game drive. This is the perfect time to view Kilimanjaro, with possibly clear views of the entirety of the great mountain, snow-capped peak, and all.
We’ll have breakfast and take in the beauty of the park surrounding us. It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood.
We’ve enjoyed the wonders of Amboseli but now it’s time to trek on to Nairobi.
