The sight of dust-red elephant wallowing, rolling and spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. This, along with the 300 kilomtere long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, make for an adventure unlike any other in the Tsavo East.
From the sight of fifty million gallons of crystal clear water gushing out of from the under parched lava rock that is the Mzima Springs to the Shetani lava flows, Tsavo West is a beautiful, rugged wilderness.
Your driver/guide will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel, residence, or Nairobi airport.
We’ll head out in our 4 x 4 Jeep for Tsavo East on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway also known as the early explorer’s route.
Safari
We’ll arrive at Tsavo’s gate where the immense sweep of the park’s great expanse will fill our horizon. Take a break if you’d like but then we’ll fire up the 4 x 4 and head off on our first game drive.
This is big savannah country and we’ll be looking for lions and the great elephants that populate these red-dust plains. Punctuating the arid sweep of the park, it’s refreshing watering holes are a natural draw for the reserve’s thirsty inhabitants.
We may visit Aruba Dam and Mudanda Rock to watch the elephants and lesser creatures gather for sustenance at these watering spots.
We’ll enjoy lunch and then jump into the 4 x 4 for more afternoon game drives. Throughout your safari, your driver/guide is your expert advisor on all manner of wildlife and the wondrous scenes of nature before you.
Overnight
You’ll spend your first safari night at Tsavo East at the lodge or tented camp of your choice.
We like to arise early while on safari for the beauty of the dawning day and to watch nature come alive, as the wildlife emerges.
After this early morning game drive, we’ll enjoy a safari breakfast at our accommodation. Then, one last game drive at Tsavo East before we depart for the majesty of Kilimanjaro and Amboseli Park.
You’ll be able to trace your route to the park by the looming appearance of the great mountain standing over Amboseli like an ever-present guardian. Under its watchful gaze marches a wonderful collection of free-ranging elephants that fill the reserve.
But also look for the park’s smaller treasures like foxes, monkeys, and baboons. And at its marshes and lakes, you’ll see a delightful assortment of birdlife like pelicans, kingfishers, egrets, and herons.
Come evening the cloud cover sometimes obscuring Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit burns off, revealing one of Africa’s most dazzling sights.
Overnight
Our second safari night will be in Amboseli at your choice of accommodation.
Once again, we’ll hop into our 4 x 4 Jeep for an early morning game drive to witness Amboseli’s dawning wildlife. Early morning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro can also be breathtaking.
We’ll enjoy breakfast but let’s not linger as we can enjoy an extra mid-morning game drive through the park. We’ll look for those species we haven’t yet spotted and add them to our list as we complete our safari.
We’ll break for lunch and then journey back to Nairobi. We should arrive in the late afternoon.
